I had a nasty problem with Microsoft Word today. It abruptly stopped working. This occurred on a new machine running Vista Home Premium and MS Office 2007 Professional.
The symptoms were the following. When I double-clicked on any Word document in Window Explorer, the Word window came up but would not display the contents of the file. I tried launching Word and then trying to select "File -> Open...", but that hung before the file selection dialog even came up. I then restarted Word and tried "File -> Word Options...". This opened the dialog but only the first tab could be viewed. At this point, I tried rebooting but that did not help.
I then proceeded with a web search for a solution. There were many similar and very disturbing stories. A number of people completely uninstalled Office and reinstalled, but the problem persisted. Luckily I found a page by Tim Anderson that offered a simple solution that worked. I did the following:
- Close Word
- Select "Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt" to open a DOS window
- Type "regedit" to start the registry editor
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
- Rename this key to DataOld
- Restart Word
Update October 31, 2008. I arrived this Halloween morning to a replay of this scary situation. Again MICROSOFT WORD STOPPED WORKING!!!! During the night Vista applied patches and rebooted the machine. This may be what causes the problem, although I must admit that I cannot understand how such a serious issue exists. Luckily the same fix solved the problem.
